There's a "magic"thing in music,particulary in funk and jazz: it's groove.
Very difficult to explain(and to play !)everybody can feel and hear it.It's this sensation you have(on a concert or on cd's)of a perfect harmony in the band;the impression of a"turning machine system"  that makes you dance.
In fact the groove is a perfect rythmic symbiose between all the members of a group.Like in love(play music with others is a kind of love story!)it's important to listen and find the same feeling.Maybe the groove is the african side of jazz and funk:more than a leader(like in us and european music)they prefer a musical group power.Everybody in the band can exprime and have the same weight
in the 60's,in response of too much technical jazz chorus and very long guitar solos, James Brown gave a rhytmic role to all the instruments in his band :guitars must play like drums, organ must play like drums...the game was not to make personnal exhibition but to complete the others:find holes in the rhytm and play there.
Like in a puzzle instruments are completing themselves:
it gives big musical machine.
you can hear to illustrate this phénomene james brown(of course) but also:herbie hancock(album headhunters)earth wind,al jarreau, sly and family stone...
you can find groove in marley's band(listen to jammin' in babylon by bus)...
but maybe, to understand groove ,you have to listen the song"jean pierre" in the album "we want miles" from miles davis.
In this song, fusion between funk and jazz ,with just a few notes, a mélody that seems a child song, playing in just one key , the groove makes something magic !

so what?

what the link with abalone?
well...maybe when you're looking for groove, it's less important to be technic than to play with somebody else and have fun!!like in abalone...the best players know the technic and play with groove...so they can be in improvisation, always differents  and..humoristics

so next time we'll speak about the star académy...
no?
bon tant pis !
